To combat the increasing crime of number plates cloning several avenues have been explored. The supply has been legislated with all suppliers required to register and display their name and postcode on plates and purchasers must produce proof of I.D. and entitlement at the time of order. This does not stop them being removed from another car though and self destructing plates as well as tamper proof fixings are also being investigated although if they are not made mandatory it is hard to see how they will be effective. Cherished number plates are not acfeected in the same way, they are too easily remebered to be of use to the criminal.
